Technology coaches model and promote digital citizenship.
- Model and promote strategies for achieving equitable access to digital tools and resources and technology-related best practices for all students and teachers.
- Model and facilitate safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.
- Model and promote diversity, cultural understanding and global awareness by using digital age communication and collaboration tools to interact locally and globally with students, peers, parents and the larger community.
Michael Josephson, founder of the Josephson Institute for Ethics, conducted a 2002 student survey on cheating, and said students take their lead from adults in their lives. "They're basically decent kids whose values are being totally corrupted by a world which is sanctioning stuff that even they know is wrong. But they can't understand why everybody allows it” (“A Cheating Crisis in America’s Schools,” 2018). Young people see discrepancies and injustices happening in our court systems, political and moral corruption being condoned, and educated people being left homeless and without employment. These inconsistencies confuse students who are being told to do the right thing, complete their own work, and see the fruits of their labor. They find that cheating is simply a dress rehearsal for the real world. It is sort of like taking a standardized test. You aren’t necessarily passing the test due to your knowledge, but you’ve studied and practiced and know how to trick the test to get the best grade. And thanks to the digital age, cheating is becoming easier than ever. That is why promoting integrity should be a priority for technology coaches. But how do we teach our students about integrity? How do we stress its importance instead of acting like plagiarism police, always looking to punish the next perpetrator?
The lines of morality and ethics are getting more blurred than ever these days. The internet currently offers an abundance of research tools and modes of communication and creation, so there really should be general rules of etiquette and ethics when creating content and expressing oneself on the internet. Since there is no one universal list of ways to behave and conduct business on the internet, educators and technology coaches need to curate common ground rules to share with their students and school communities. Digital citizenship, or what most people would simply call common courtesy, fosters encouraging and safe digital environments for students and their peers, so they can share and communicate freely. It protects creators' work so that other users may not simply poach and pass off content as their own. Digital citizenship invites people to branch out and engage with cultures differing from their own, so they may expand their wealth of knowledge and make the world a little smaller, user by user.

#1 Homecoming Video
This past year, I was able to practice intellectual integrity with the members of the homecoming court at Belvedere High School. The students asked me for assistance with their homecoming videos; essentially, they were two-minute videos highlighting why they should be homecoming king/queen. As I helped them film and edit their footage, we needed to incorporate music, so I made it clear they needed to use royalty free sounds and music for this part. I introduced them to a couple websites for this, including bensound.com. The importance of doing this would never have crossed my mind had I not been enrolled in Authoring Tools at NJCU, where we had spent a week on Copyright and Fair Use. In this instance, and in all educational instances as a technology coach, it is important for me to act as a positive role model, practicing solid ethics and digital citizenship. Here is one of the videos I helped to create, using WeVideo, an excellent video editing tool.

#2 Hispanic Heritage Video
I created this video as a part of a kickoff for my Hispanic Heritage Project. This video includes helpful information about what it means to be Hispanic, some of the cultural traits of the group, and their presence in the United States. It also encourages students to learn more about one another and use digital tools to create a project about their newfound knowledge. I used PowToon to create this video, which is a user-friendly program and offers endless free features. This artifact is a wonderful example of modeling and promoting diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness. Students use technology to communicate and collaborate with their peers and the larger community.
