Technology coaches create and support effective digital age learning environments to maximize the learning of all students.
- Model effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources and access to technology-rich learning environments
- Maintain and manage a variety of digital tools and resources for teacher and student use in technology-rich learning environments
- Coach teachers in and model use of online and blended learning, digital content, and collaborative learning networks to support
and extend student learning as well as expand opportunities and choices for online professional development for teachers and administrators - Select, evaluate, and facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support student learning
- Troubleshoot basic software, hardware, and connectivity problems common in digital learning environments
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources that enhance teaching and learning and are compatible with the school technology infrastructure
- Use digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community
Technology is here to stay. So it's important more than ever to decide how we want students and young people to interact with technology. Do we want it to be a passive experience for them simply being entertained and fed information? Or do we, as educators and technology coaches, want to have the opportunity to enhance the digital experience for students and youth, to actively explore all the possibilities technology has to offer, creating and experimenting? This latter school of thought will not happen overnight nor will it occur with one or two people. It is imperative for a school staff, the administrators, and a district to be on board with this initiative to integrate technology in such a way that humans are controlling the artificial intelligence and not the other way around. And therein lies the challenge of the digital experience. Recently, Elon Musk shared some dismal thoughts about technology and artificial intelligence: "It scares the hell out of me...it's capable of vastly more than almost anyone knows and the rate of improvement is exponential" (Clifford). Musk urges people to figure out a way for digital super intelligence to be "symbiotic with humanity" (Clifford). He calls for the regulation of artificial intelligence. While I am not exactly sure where I stand with Musk's opinion, he does make valid points about making sure we run technology, not that it runs us.

#1: "Please Wait" No More Tutorial
Audio visual modes of learning can be very effective. I chose to maximize its value by creating a troubleshooting tutorial. This could have easily been distributed to our school community via a memo using Google Docs, but I wanted to create and share this information in a unique way that would show the power of audio visual learning. I even got some freshmen on board to participate as actors! I hope this will be the first of many videos in the Seater Media Center series. My goal is to eventually create a production studio in our school to create content like this, as well as other beneficial and entertaining programming to our staff, students, and the community beyond. I recently purchased a large green screen and a quality camera (still photos and video), so we are on our way!

#2: STEAM Night
Many districts are currently working to implement a strong STEAM program in their schools. We are doing the same at my school. We recently held a STEAM Night and invited all community members to join us to learn more about the field. We coordinated with teachers of Math, Engineering, and even Culinary Arts, which, as attendees learned, is the oldest STEAM field in existence! Each display was selected to offer extend technological opportunities for our students and support their learning. I helped organize the event and brought my Samsung VR goggles. As you can see from the photos, they were a hit! Our goals for next year are to plan more activities in advance, get more teachers and departments on board, and advertise even more to our community.
